Unfortunately the Firebase database storing most of the dictionary items has been lost. The site still functions to show the design but the browse option would have showed many more slang phrases.
Here is an example!
累成狗
Pin yin: Lei4 cheng2 gou3 le
English definition: Tired like a dog
Chinese example sentence: 昨天的作业超级难,我累成狗了!
English example sentence: Yesterday's homework was so hard, I'm tired like a dog!

Project Description:
I worked with two partners to come up with the idea of Slanguage for a class assignment to create a web-based business. As NYU Shanghai has many foreign students in China who don't speak fluent Chinese, we wanted to create a way for them to learn slang that wouldn't be taught in the traditional classroom setting. The concept for Slanguage was to be similar to Urban Dictionary but for Chinese phrases and English definitions, including the Chinese characters, pinyin for pronunciation, example sentences, and even pictures to go with them. Users can search, browse, and even add their own words and definitions to the dictionary. There is also a word of the day feature like on Urban Dictionary, although currently the word of the day changes every time the page is refreshed.
To create Slanguage we used html, css, and React.js to do the coding, and also used Google’s Firebase to store data and require viewers to sign in to add a new word to the dictionary. We also put together a business presentation including our mission, users, timeline, and future steps, for example adding likes and comments. We then launched Slanguage within the NYU Shanghai community.
